Declutter for Lent: 40 Bags in 40 Days

Declutter for Lent: 40 Bags in 40 Days

Happy Ash Wednesday! The 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge was brought to my attention back in 2012. I found it a great way to declutter my entire house. Instead of giving up one thing for the 40 days of Lent, try giving up a bag of clutter each day.

40 Bags Lent Challenge

  • First, make a list of 40 areas in your home where you can search for items to get rid of. Use Little Lucy Lu’s blog as a guide to pick various spots in your home: closet, kitchen, junk drawer, kids’ rooms, pantry, makeup bag, car, bathroom, garage, etc.
  • On the designated day, go through that space and get rid of what you can.
  • The ‘bags’ don’t always have to be large trash bags – you can think small too: snack-size ziplock bags; brown paper lunch bags; etc. The point is to see what you can live without while clearing the clutter. This might even inspire you to keep up the habit throughout the year.

Is it just me, or is this WAY better than giving up chocolate for 40 days!?! Bonus: you’re getting your spring cleaning done early.

I challenge you this Lent to use 40 Bags in 40 Days to declutter your life – and if you take me up on it, I hope you’ll share your thoughts/experience.

Thanks for posting this! I have a house cleaning business and have a client that asked me to work on a declutter project every time I come to her home for the next several weeks. This is a great list and perfect for me to check off as I clean her home. Thanks again!

My pleasure! It’s a fun challenge to do each year. I notice the link isn’t working to Little Lucy Lu’s blog anymore so I tried to search for it. Perhaps she took it down? Regardless, follow the graphic and let me know if you come up with other ideas! Let me know how it goes with the project.
